Legendary UK musician Eric Clapton has reportedly spent $4.5 million on a bespoke Ferrari.
Clapton had the Italian car manufacturer's secretive Special Projects division rebody a Ferrari 458 Italia as an homage to the 1970s Ferrari 512, the Daily Mail reports.
He is rumoured to have wanted a V12 engine fitted to the custom car but Ferrari refused to adjust the car's engine, gearbox or suspension.
The car was put on display in a transparent box at HR Owen's Ferrari dealership in London ahead of an exclusive launch party for the new Ferrari 458 Spider.
Clapton, 66, is a renowned car collector and already owns several sought-after Ferrari models. The 512 is believed to be one of his favourites.
The $4.5 million price tag — six times more than Ferrari's most expensive production model — was revealed by mega-rich US businessman James Glickenhaus, who has a Special Projects car.
The editor of supercar video website Shmee150.co.uk, Tim Burton, was able to take some video of the car while it was on display.
"It is fantastic to be fortunate enough to see a car that is this special, a unique one-of-one which carries incredible value," Burton said.
"You always expect cars like this to head directly to private collections and garages never to be seen again.
"Even though it was only on display very briefly, a huge stir was caused in the car community.
"It was exaggerated more so by Ferrari keeping the car hidden away with only a small number of eyes laying sight on it."
